A Word from the Principal

March 2010

Welcome to March!!! As in most months, the calendar is full of activities and events. I would like to highlight a few of them.
I would first like to update you on our Hope for Haiti fundraiser. Our grand total came to $1675! I so appreciate the benevolent spirit of our students and families. Thank you for your support of this endeavor. The proceeds will assist in providing medical supplies, fuel for generators, meals and other supplies to aid in relief efforts for the children at Children’s Village, and orphanage in Haiti.
On Tuesday, March 2, we will celebrate Read Across America. Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of children's author Dr. Seuss. We will have several guests that morning reading to our students at 9:00.
On Thursday, March 4, we will have Breakfast with a Buddy from 7:45-8:45. A notice was sent home in Thursday folders on February 18. We are looking forward to this fun morning!
McTeacher Night was an awesome success and a lot of fun! Our next PTO restaurant night will be March 11 at the Rib Crib. Proceeds from the restaurant nights are being earmarked by PTO to purchase SMART Boards for classrooms for the upcoming school year.
Our monthly PTO meeting has been rescheduled from its normal time of 4:00 on the first Thursday of the month, to 4:00 on Tuesday, March 9.
There will be no school on Friday, March 5 for Parent-Teacher conferences. Your teacher will be contacting you regarding a conference time during that week. Also, there will be no school on March 15-19 for Spring Break.
Finally, I appreciate your efforts in getting your student to school on time each morning. It has a significant impact on the start of the day. When students arrive on time they don’t have the anxiety of entering class late, and classroom disruptions are minimized. Punctuality is a life principle that will serve students the rest of their lives. I appreciate your help with this!

As always, I appreciate your support of our school. It makes all the difference! Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions.

Sincerely,

Mr. Nelson

About our School

Welcome to Richmond Elementary School.  We are one of six elementary schools in Stillwater, Oklahoma.  Stillwater, home of Oklahoma State University, is located southwest of Tulsa and about 76 miles north of Oklahoma City.

The school first opened its doors to students and parents in the fall of 1990.  Our staff of dedicated teachers, administrator, counselor, media specialist, teacher assistants, cafeteria staff, custodians, and secretaries serve 500 students in Pre-K through Fifth grade.

Richmond Elementary is a Great Expectations school.  Great Expectations' basic principles involve setting high expectations of students, establishing mutual respect among students and teachers, maintaining orderly classrooms, realizing a correlation exists among all subjects taught and instilling self-esteem in students with the belief they can succeed.  All staff members participate in extensive training in Great Expectations during the summer and throughout the school year.  Accelerated Reader, a reading comprehension program, is a key support for all students in reaching high standards in reading.  Our Math Masters program involves all students in grades three through five in learning their math facts.

Parent support is one of our greatest assets at Richmond.  All parents are members of the Richmond Parent Teacher Organization (RPTO).  The RPTO provides supports to our students and staff through fund raising for classroom instructional materials, playground equipment, field trips and other educations needs.  The RPTO sponsors our Family Carnival and Breakfast with a Buddy.  They provide volunteers for work day, class speaker, students monitors, Safe Schools Committee as well as classroom volunteers. Parents volunteer throughout our school everyday in the library, reading to classes, AR readers, and special projects.

Oklahoma State University is a great resource for enhancing the education of our students.  OSU students volunteer in our classrooms, daycare, and on the playground.  Through a cooperative work-study program we have OSU students working as math and reading tutors for our students during the school day.  Teachers find the university a great resource for curriculum and instructional support.

Richmond Early Childhood Center was opened in Fall of 2004.  We provide half-day and full-day Pre-K and Kindergarten to over 150 students.  All classroom teachers are Early Childhood certified and each class has a teacher assistant.  Classes begin at 8:50 and half day students are picked up at 11:20.  Full-day Pre-K students end their day at 3:15 and kindergarten students end their day at 3:30.  Before and after school childcare is provided for students at both sites.

Visitors are welcome at Richmond.  We ask that ALL visitors check in to the office and receive a nametag before entering our hallways and classrooms.  Our students' safety is our greatest concern.
